After stripping out MySQL completely, then PHP, and reinstalling still doesn’t work – WTF.
Next step – rebuild the machine – fresh install of Raspbmc might be nice!

tail -f /var/log/mysql/mysqld.log (or wherever the hell your mysql logs are). Simples

How do you mange memory consumption on mysql? For me it takes pretty much and i already had a memory problem where services where killed…
BTW:
Your xbmc has a little typo in step 2 i think (source /. not ./)
Have a look at rpimonitor and pyload if you havent, nice little addons to rpi 🙂
